An incredibly new luxurious addition to the Northern Rivers region is the Mullumbimby Banya Bathhouse, a modern version of a traditional European bathhouse built on an old bank site from the 1920s.
Long-standing publican- Brenden Lawless wanted to create a space that preserved the building’s history while offering something new. Sam Gibson sat down with Banya’s GM Carlee Bufalino to gain greater insight into the therapeutic experience for locals and visitors alike.

“Why did Brendan create the bathhouse?” Carlee replied, “From travels and from the way it made Brendan feel… he is just a spa enthusiast. I can relate to that. He has an affliction for old things- cars, furniture, art. The Bathhouse is inspired from his travels from Northern Europe and Russia.”
Being social is a big part of the Banya. When you enter the doors, it is an instant sensory experience with heated magnesium pools, a cold plunge pool, a wood-fired sauna, a steam room and showers that include the overhead ‘Bunya bucket.’ The Banya has been open just shy of 3 months. It has gained instant popularity amongst celebrating groups, friends, family, couples, and even those that incorporate self-care into their work day.

“Why did you guys choose to incorporate an element of dining as well?” Carlee replied, “From his (Brendan’s) travels. This is how you experience bathhouses across Europe, where they have a bar inside, and you are able to sip a Prosecco or get something light to eat. It also speaks to the social aspect of the business as well. Not only is it just bathing and wellness, it has a huge emphasis on being social.”
Carlee explained going from sweat to cold is incredibly metabolic for the body. There are so many spaces to be immersed in the space integrating health and wellness with great hospitality and ambience. Upstairs has five bespoke treatment rooms. The daybeds and sun lounging areas are also available to order food and beverage from, with immediate plans to expand some more lounging and bathing spaces. Who are you finding is your main clientele? “Kind of anyone. I’m shocked to see how varied the age groups are, from 18-year-olds to 80-year-old couples.”

The Banya Bathhouse is a must-see for those wanting to try something extrasensory and luxurious. Even if you are based outside of Mullumbimby, it is most definitely worth a trip. You can find it located in the main area at 35-37 Burringbar St.
